Need MPC55x, MPC556xx

  • Hi,

I'm after a solution to debug (breakpoints, singlestep etc) in the old MPC55x, MPC56x architectures.

Which of your hardware supports CodeWarrior, and can you suggest a complete solution for this? Or with other 3:rd party software. Or your own.

I have been reading on your page, but for this old MPC i find it hard to understand which hardware/version works with which software/version.

  • Greetings,

We are here to help and thank you for your interest in our products!

You can go down the route of using Codewarrior classic from Freescale/NPX if you still plan on making changes to your code because it has everything you need from compiler/assembler, programming, and debugging in a single package. You can use our hardware tools, and the programming/debugging is handled by our software that is being called by the Codewarrior IDE. You will require a license from NXP which unlocks all of the features you need.

If you only require debugging and have no plans of coding, then you can use our ICDPPCNEXUS software for debugging. This is our own software and this is the software being called by Codewarrior IDE when you click on debug. This purchase also includes flash programming.

Therefore you have 2 options for software. For hardware, you should look into our Multilink Universal FX hardware:

You could go down the cheaper route with Multilink Universal (non-FX) however know that you will see significantly slower programming speeds. This may not be an issue if you are debugging the same ELF file because you will not require reprogramming after each debug session, however, if you plan on making changes after each debug session then the slow speed can eat into your development and debugging times:

All other hardware solutions either does not support PowerPC Nexus (aka Qorivva) or it does not fit your needs like production programming.

  • Greetings,

Do you have any other questions or concerns?
