Frdm-KL25z board does not respond/MSD does not open anymore

  • Hallo everybody,

After unboxing the frdm-kl25z board and running it for the first time as stated in the Quick Start description my board suddenly stopped working after updating it to the newest bootloader version (as described in the description).

All drivers have been updated, deinstalled, re-installed, checked etc., they should work properly. Nevertheless the MSD and the COM port are not accesible anymore, although they have been there after initial installation. Additionally it seems that the bootloader is also not working properly because any form of debbuging and/or updating does not have any influence on the device.

So far no application except for the update have been tried on the device before it gave up working, reaching it via Putty or P&E Server is also not possible due to the COM port is not recogniced anymore.

Is there any chance to restore the board to its faculty settings or debug the problem.

    Thanks in advance

  • Hi Martin,

Please start up the board in the Bootloader mode and paste the contents of the SDA_INFO.HTM file into your response. It would be helpful to see what exactly is the version of Bootloader/Opensda application you are working with and take it from there.

What operating system are you currently working under?

  • I to have an unresponsive FRDM-KL25Z after trying to do an update.

    SDA_INFO.HTM shows –
    Board Name is: FRDM-KL25Z
    MicroBoot Kernel Version is: 1.05
    Bootloader Version is: 1.09
    Application Version is: 0.00

    Board registered to _____________.

Whenever I try to update the Bootloader (by a Drag and drop), the Green LED just flashes 7 times in quick succession, pauses, then flashes another 7 times and repeats….

I originally got the FRDM-KL25Z to use with a FRDM-CD1030EVM. When trying to use the SPIgen software to monitor the FRDM-CD1030EVM, I get the error message - the usb to spi device was not found.

  • Hello,

What version of operating system are you working under?

Erich Styger does a very nice job of describing a step by step Bootloader procedure in his blog. Please let me know if you are following all the steps outlined:

    https://mcuoneclipse.com/2014/11/01/illustrated-step-by-step-instructions-updating-the-freescale-freedom-board-firmware/

You can download the latest collection of OpenSDA applications from P&E website:

    http://www.pemicro.com/opensda/

Please start up the board in Bootloader mode and use BOOTUPDATEAPP_Pemicro_v111.SDA application to perform the update. Once it is done, you have to start up the board in Bootloader mode again and drag and drop MSD-DEBUG-FRDM-KL25Z_Pemicro_v118.SDA application into Bootloader mass storage device.

Please note that since your board is running an older Bootloader OpenSDA firmware, you have to use a Windows XP or Windows 7 PC to perform an actual Bootloader update.

    • Hi Zahar,

      I'm operating under windows 7.

When I initially start or open the Bootloader, the Green LED is Flashing on and off at around a half second rate.

When I drag and Drop BOOTUPDATEAPP_Pemicro_v111.SDA in the Bootloader, the LED flashes 6-7 times in quick succession, pauses a few seconds, then flashes another 6-7 times and repeats. Is that what I should be seeing?

      • Hi Zahar,

        I think I found the Problem, I didn't follow this instruction -

❗ You *have* to extract/unzip the files. You *cannot* copy/move the files from inside the zip file to the bootloader device.

I tried moving instead of extracting.

After extracting then drag and dropping, I got this when looking at SDA_INFO.HTM

        Board Name is: FRDM-KL25Z
        MicroBoot Kernel Version is: 1.05
        Bootloader Version is: 1.11
Installed Application: PEMicro FRDM-KL25Z Mass Storage/Debug App
        Application Version is: 1.18
        DUID is: F7A33938-D57381B2-375E9806-C68CE678
        EUID is: FF41A239-57D9871C-185DBA21-A49568D6
        TUID is: 74823938-473281A3-37640819-C53AE678
        TOA is: 86B6E505-F9B4DA4E-41E6B687-D3329150
        TOA2 is: 86B6E505-62E3657B-CDE430D7-9D33FEDF
        SUID is: 86B6E505-6C47A61D-37239804-8003EC65

        It was correctly updated.

        Thanks

  • Hi Paul,

Great! I am glad that you got your setup up and running. From looking at the SDA_INFO.HTM file I can confirm that you properly updated to the latest version of Bootloader.
