PROGCFZ fails to program Freescale Coldfire MC5213CAF66

  • Hello, we have recently purchased a Multilink Unversal FX to replace our venerable Multilink Coldfire (which was on the point of dying - and now has).
The problem we have is that we cannot get the FX to program the internal FLASH, we have tried your patch for CF Flasher - this did not work at all - so we downloaded the resource CD and the free development tools that include PROGCFZ.

We have updated the firmware in the FX, are using the latest drivers (the FX shows up in Win 7-64bit Device Manager OK), but the error we keep getting is that when we try to program the device with the selected image file we get an 'Out of Memory' error from PROGCFZ.

The Status window shows that it has detected the 5213, loaded the image file OK but when it comes to programming the Status window shows:

    Erasing. Module has been erased.
Checking range of S records. Checked.
Programming Address $ Error - out of memory.
    . Error during programming.($00000000)

This happens every time we try to program or reprogram the devices.
Can you assist with this issue as we currently have no way to reprogram Coldfire devices.

    Many Thanks
    Richard

  • Greetings,

Out of memory error is due to using a limited-edition of the PROGCFZ software. Are you using our trial software? If so, then most likely your binary file is too large to use for the code-size limitation of the trial software.

We do not do any kind of time-limited full license. 2 things we can try is you can send us your binary file and we can test the file for you. You can do this by going to Support page -> Support requests and create a ticket so you can attach a file.

But if you are not allowed to send files, then the best next option is getting a full license and if you still have issues and if our technical support cannot help resolve this issue, then we can get you a refund.

    • Hello Takao.

This was the news I was kind of expecting. Does this now mean that, after spending $400 on a replacement programmer we are now expected to spend another $200 on some software to allow us to program things with it?

This seems a little steep, why isn't some form of programming software (not memory limited, and only for erasing, blank checking, programming and verifying the Coldfire FLASH) included as part of the $400 programmer (like it is with most, if not all, the other programmer devices we encounter)?

Am I expected to get our company to spend a further 50% of the cost of the programming hardware on a software program to see if this is the actual cause of the observed error?

      Best Regards
      Richard

  • Greetings,

Our multilinks are sold as a-la-carte system. Not all customers need software when they purchase a multilink hardware because they are using software like Codewarrior, Kinetis Design Studio, S32, KEIL, IAR, and many other IDE's that we support. If you have these software you are welcome to use the multilink with the IDE. You also could have chosen the cheaper multilink universal hardware instead of the multilink universal FX hardware if you are cost-prohibited.

CF Flasher would have been a good solution if it was updated by Freescale/NXP to work on modern operating systems but they have stopped developing it. If you have no software at all, then you will need to purchase a PROGCFZ license.

Like I said, you could send us your binary file and we can confirm that it works on our end without any error on a full PROGCFZ license, and/or you can purchase a license and see that the issue is resolved and hopefully be happy with the purchase.
